Eskdale Trip to Paris March 2012
43 pupils and 5 staff spent 4 days in Paris. We spent the first day in Paris visiting many of its beautiful historic site. The view of Paris from the top of the Eiffel Tower was breathtaking. We spent the afternoon walking around the city enjoying the warm sunshine and admiring Paris’ beautiful buildings. Our walk took us from the famous Notre Dame Cathedral through the Palace of the Louvre to the Place de la Concorde (site of the executions of 1300 French Citizens including its King and Queen). After a stroll around the Artistic Quarter (Montmartre) many of the group had their portraits done by Parisian Artists. We finished our day with a scenic boat trip along the river Seine.
The highlight of the trip was our day in Disneyland. Once again we had a lovely sunny day enjoying all the rides, shows and meeting many of Disney’s famous characters. The Parade at the end of the day was spectacular and full of colour. Everyone had a wonderful day.
On our way home we stopped to have a look at a huge French hypermarket and buy some presents. Most of the students had a go at talking French during the trip and managed to make themselves understood. Alex and Charlotte won the quiz on the coach trip home. All the staff agreed that it had been a very successful trip, thanks to the excellent behaviour of every single student. Merci tout le monde.

Year 8 PSHCE – The Real Game
This week Year 8 students have received their job roles. What is it all about?
The Real Game was originally developed in 1994 by Bill Barry, a Canadian teacher whose 12-year-old daughter felt the subjects she was studying at school were not relevant to her future life. This inspired Bill to create a career and life skills education programme that would help students see the connection between school studies and adult life beyond school.
In the game, students role-play as single adults in occupational roles. They see how schoolwork relates to occupational choices and therefore to lifestyle and income. Within their job-role, students have the opportunity to explore adult realities, such as budgeting (taxes, mortgage or rent, other bills and transport), work life balance, different work and family roles and career making decisions.
The job profiles included in the game reflect a broad range of employment opportunities and demonstrate that not all jobs are created equally and in the real world some people are stuck in jobs they do not like. Students learn that if they plan ahead and make the most of their school years they may avoid this eventuality. By the end of the Real Game, students realise that satisfaction in work is a priority issue in life and that it is an outcome that they can achieve by making the choices that are right for them.
