SCIENCE

"Science is all around us, like a sea, from the tiniest grain of sand to the mighty universe. Jump in and learn!"

Science at Eskdale is fun. In as many lessons as possible we learn by experimenting and by investigating. It is important to learn how to work as a team and to discuss your ideas with others. Some of our work involves books but all the time we are learning about the wonder of science and how it fits into our daily lives. In Year 7 & 8 we use the Wikid scheme, where students become trainee Forensic Scientists, Doctors, Chefs and Special Effects Experts etc in order to learn science facts and skills. Here are some of the topics we look into divided up by years.

Year 9 are starting their Science GCSE early.

The Course is called OCR 21st Century Science. Students are studying Module B1 - You and your Genes, Module C1 - Air Quality and Module P1 - Earth in Space. They will take their first mock GCSE Exam on Thursday 23rd June 2011 at 9am. Students are encouraged to use the bbc bitesize website for revision ( link below)

There are plenty of opportunities for practical work in well-equipped laboratories with well qualified and experienced teachers. We have 3 science teachers. Mrs Pearson in Lab 1, Mrs Norman in Lab 2, and Mrs Whelan & Miss Watson who teach science part time.

Our recent Key Stage 3 results show us in the top 10% in the country. Our early entry GCSE results were also excellent, with 93% of our students gaining A* - C grades in Module 1. We are very proud of our students and what they achieve. You can be part of this success.

Trips and Visits

Every year Science goes out on several visits. We have been to Scotland and Cornwall for a week. We have also been to The Life Centre, The Deep, The Planetarium and York University for day trips.

Science Club

Every week we hold a Science club where you can try experiments we do not have time to fit into our classwork. We run competitions as part of Science club and take part in national and local events.

STEM Club

Year 9 students have the opportunity to work with year 9 students from Caedmon and year 10 students from WCC in our STEM club (Science Technology Engineering and Maths). This year we visited the Medical School at Hull University. We went inside the operating theatre and learnt how to be a paramedic.

Cross Curricular Days

On cross curricular days the Science department offers the chance to work in small groups on challenging tasks, some inside some outside. There are chances to win prizes. This year, as part of Africa day, we were lucky enough to have workshops where students could touch turtles, snakes, pygmi hedgehogs and lizards. This was kindly run by Askam Bryan College.

The World of Science

We encourage you to take an interest in Science, not just in your lessons, but also in the World. It is important to try and find out what is going on in the world and how it is changing our lives. We hope you will take a point of view about things using what you learn. This makes us better citizens. Advances in science happen every day, perhaps you will be part of that one day!
