MUSIC

"One good thing about music-when it hits you, you feel no pain"

The Music Department Curriculum

In music we cover the requirements for the National Curriculum for music:  performing, composing, listening and appraising.  Students are taught using a variety of instruments and voice.   They are also encouraged to use any instruments they are learning outside of the classroom

Instrumental Tuition

We are able to offer lessons through North Yorkshire County Council Education Department Music Service in the following areas.

  • Woodwind - Mr B Butterfield
  • Brass/Singing - Mr A Cross
  • Percussion - Mr P Tilley
  • Strings - Ms L McKay
  • Piano/keyboard - Mrs S Smith
  • Guitar - Mrs M Philips

If pupils have been learning at their junior schools they should be transferred automatically when they come to Eskdale.  For further information please contact Mrs Anderson.

Extended Curriculum

There are opportunities every lunchtime to participate in a variety of musical activities.  We have a flourishing band and all wind players are encouraged to come along.  There is a string group, a recorder group and a choir which is open to all.  After school there are opportunities for rock bands to rehearse.  There are many opportunities for all groups of students to perform during the year, either in our twice yearly concerts or in the ‘Battle of the Bands’ or our annual Talent Show.

June 2008 saw the Eskdale production of "Grease" which had been in rehearsal since January. It was directed by Ms L Estille and Mrs B Anderson was the musical director. Every single member of the cast worked extremely hard to produce three excellent performanes, and it was a joy to see these young people developing their talents and growing in confidence.

Associated Board Examinations

Eskdale School is the local Centre for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.  Students come to Eskdale for their instrumental examinations including the jazz syllabus and also theory of music examinations

Curricular Day July 2008

A group of 20 students went to The Sage at Gateshead to take part in a Samba Workshop. We visited the Baltic Arts Centre first to see an exhibition by a japanese artist, Yokomoto. The workshop itself was lead by a cuban musician who turned us into a respectable Samba Band by the end of the session!

Year 7 Concert

This year we are getting all the Year 7 students involved in a concert which is to be performed on Thursday 23rd October. Already there are some talented musicians emerging from this years intake and it promises to be a very enjoyable evening.
